Hello everyone! I just received this great news! God's light, Mr. "D" Dear Education Department Members, I hope you are doing well and staying healthy. Good News. PCC just attended an Admin/PDE COVID vaccine stakeholders meeting. PDE and the Administration mentioned the following: PA will receive 94,600 Johnson & Johnson vaccines tomorrow. All of these vaccines will be allotted to teachers and schools. 28 IU’s will administer the vaccine starting on March 13th. You will be contacted with a time and location for your vaccine. Catholic and private schools are included and elementary schools that are in person will be selected first, than middle and then high schools. A registration link (survey) will be going out tomorrow to schools. Philadelphia will be doing a separate rollout for their teachers. The plan is to have all admin, teachers and staff vaccinated by the end of March or early April. Thank you. God bless, Sean McAleer Pa. Catholic Conference

Provision of School Health Services to Private/Non-public Schools In 1962, the legislature passed the School Nurse Act. This act was considered revolutionary at the time because it required equitable services to be provided to students, whether they attended public or non-public schools. This law remains in effect today as Section 1402(a.1) of the Pennsylvania Public School Code. The Department of Health regulations state in Section 23.51 "A child in private, parochial and public schools shall be provided with school nurse services in the school which the child attends;" and Section 23.52 "The school nurse services shall be provided through the public school system and the administration of this service shall be the responsibility of the public school administrator in consultation, as needed, with the private or parochial school administrator. School nurse services are considered to be one of the mandated services (same as examinations and screens) and include the same nursing functions as those provided to students in public school buildings, such as assessment of student health care needs, development of appropriate plans of care, medication administration, first aid and emergency care, etc. Neither the law nor regulation distinguish differences in the level of service to public vs. non-public schools. Many school districts include private and non-public schools as buildings being served in the School Health Annual Reimbursement Request System (SHARRS). The school district receives the same level of reimbursement for these students as those attending the public school buildings. Therefore, the expectation is that all students receive equitable nursing services from the school district. Provision of non-equitable services could adversely affect the school district's reimbursement. Many of the nursing services can be performed by supplemental licensed health staff such as non-certified RNs and LPNs working in consultation with the CSN. In addition, the Pennsylvania Public School Code (PSC) requires that schools educate students and provide a safe, healthy environment. The PSC (Section 1401 ) also requires that schools employ nurses. Section 1402(a.1) requires that "every child of school age shall be provided with school nurse services…" In the School Health regulations, 28 PA Code, Chapter 23, Section 23.74, it is a function of the school nurse to interpret the health needs of individual children. However, school nurses don't just function under Educational law. They are licensed by the Department of State, Board of Nursing and licensure requirements are in effect regardless of the nurse's practice setting. The Nurse Practice regulations require (49 PA Code, Chapter 21, Section 21.11) that nurses follow the "standards of practice and professional codes of behavior" published by the American Nurses Association as the "criteria for assuring safe and effective practice." The standards are "authoritative statements of the duties that all registered nurses, regardless of role, population, or specialty, are expected to perform competently." These standards outline the nursing process for provision of safe care (assessment, nursing diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, coordination of care and evaluation). School nurses cannot effectively follow these standards of practice unless they rotate through all of the buildings in their caseload assignment on a "regular basis". This could mean daily or it could mean 1-2 days/month. It depends on the assessment of student needs as determined by the school nurse.
Hi Stephen, In the past, your school was able to bring in Young Audiences assemblies to perform for your students through a grant from the Connelly Foundation. The Foundation is once again providing grants for schools in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to get programming from Young Audiences. These $850 grants allow Catholic schools in Eastern Pennsylvania to get a grant towards a Young Audiences program. This subsidy can be used to cover the total cost of a program that fits within this budget or to help you cover the partial cost of a program greater than $850. We are eager to work with you to select an arts program that fits your school’s needs. There are still 12 grants available. They can be used for SEL or culturally diverse virtual assemblies, workshops or professional learning. Here’s a link to our new virtual catalog: https://www.yanjep.org/virtual-program-catalog/ The programs need to take place before June 30, 2021. Please call or email me to discuss if you are interested in the grant and what options would be best for your school. Thanks and I look forward to working with you again, Donna Donna Reckelhoff Young Audiences
Here is the information for Winterfest 2021!!! Thank you everyone for your patience in waiting to hear about our 22nd Annual Winterfest 2021. I am really excited to announce that Winterfest 2021 will be taking place this year but in a slightly different way. Winterfest will be held virtually on Sunday, April 18 at 11 AM in the school gym. Due to the CDC and Archdiocesan guidelines, and for everyone's safety, Winterfest will be streamed live via social media on Facebook. What this means is that baskets will be created and presented throughout the next month or so online via the group page on Facebook..(search for it as...St. Mike's Virtual Winterfest 2021.) If you are on Facebook, please look for this page to see all the baskets and any other updated information. If you aren't on Facebook, here is the information from the page: Tickets sales and take home programs will take place via curbside pickup on Fri., 4/9/21 in the school parking lot near the gym from 6 PM - 8 PM and on Sat., 4/10/21 from 11 AM - 1 PM (1 sheet/$5 or 5 sheets/$20 & specialty baskets too. Cash or check (made payable to St. Michaels) will be accepted.) (Sorry but we are not able to accept Venmo and credit cards as payments) 50/50's will be sold at this time too (15 tixs/$10 or 3 tixs/$5 cash only) and winner need not be present to win on 4/18/21. Ticket and program drop off will take place via curbside drop off on Fri., 4/16/21 from 4 PM- 7 PM and on Sat., 6/17/21 from 10 AM - 3 PM. What does this mean? You will return your tickets and the program with the baskets highlighted that you would like the chance to win. We will keep the stub (name and phone number need to be written on the back of each stub) with your program and put your tickets in the containers via live stream. On Sun., 4/18/21 we will be live streaming the drawing beginning at 11 AM. You will receive a phone call if you win a basket and arrangements will be made to pick up the basket by Sun., April 25th. Since we are able to have Winterfest, along with it comes many preparations, acquiring items to build baskets is the most important part. In order to do this, we are in need of some help. We understand that this past year hasn't been the best for everyone but if you feel that you are in a position and are able to support the children by being a sponsor or a contributor in way of gift cards, certificates or a themed basket, we would be so grateful. Being a sponsor allows you and your business to be seen by over 400-500 people. The sponsorship levels are as follows: Gold full page ad $100; Silver half page ad $75; Bronze quarter page ad $50; business card ad $25. Also, if you know someone else who would be willing to help us with our endeavor, please share this information with them. Thank you. Please contact me, Patty Walton, at 215-943-0222 if you have any questions or are interested in helping with this endeavor. We can't wait to see everyone, and as always, thank you for your continued support to the children, their families, the faculty and staff of our school. ~Patty Walton and Lisa Oser -- Smile and have a great day!
