Latest Great News! STREAM
March 15
SMA School will be a STREAM: Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art, & Math School 2019/2020 STREAM is an extension of STEM. It is an acronym for Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, and Math. (As a faith based Catholic School Religion is taught throughout the curriculum and across all subjects!) Our teachers begin in servicing this April! • What is STEM Education? What is STEM Education? STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STEM integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications. • Awesome News! New STEM Pilot Program coming to St Mike's!! Awesome News! I just received a phone call from Sister Edwards (Head of Curriculum for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia). 2019 SMA Terra Nova Testing
The Terra Nova Achievement Test, Second Edition will be administered Grades 3 through 7 on March 22 through the 29. Last year SMA School won an academic excellence award for improvement in Terra Nova scores! We want to continue that progress this year as well! The selection of this test for administration to our students is important because it provides for us valid and reliable data for important educational decisions. This additional test information will result in a more accurate measure of the academic progress of your child. I provided “Terra Nova Test Taking Tips” below for your use. There are more detailed test taking tips on our website at www.sma-pa.org. I also emailed a copy to you.
Thank you! Yours in Christ! Mr. Stephen D. DiCicco ~Principal
Tips for Parents on Terra Nova Test-Taking
1.Reassure your child that he or she does not have to answer all the questions correctly to pass. It is not expected that students answer every question correctly.
2.Tell your child to attempt to answer all of the questions and not to leave any blanks. There is no penalty for guessing, and students can get partial credit on the open-ended items.
3.Remind your child that the test is important.
4.Explain to your child the importance of using time wisely. If your child gets stuck on a question, encourage him or her to make the best guess or place a mark in the test booklet by that item and go back to it after finishing that section of the test.
5.Make certain your child gets a good night’s sleep and a good breakfast before taking the test.
6.Try to make the morning of the test a pleasant one. Do not add to your child’s stress.
7.Get your child to school on time the day of the test.
8.Remind your child to listen carefully to the instructions from the teacher and to read the directions and each question carefully.
9.Encourage your child to stay focused on the test, even if other students finish early.
10.Remind your child that it is okay to jot down notes or work on scrap paper as a help in taking the test -- i.e., -- but to mark all answers on the answer sheet.
“Test-Time”Strategies for Students and Parents
STUDENTS' TEST-TAKING STRATEGIES
Preparing for Tests
• Maintain good study habits: Do your class work.
oHave a clear understanding of homework assignments before leaving class.
oKeep a record of assignments received and completed.
oMake a study schedule and follow it.
oTell your parents about schoolwork and homework.
oTurn in homework on time.
oGet make-up assignments when returning from an absence.
oSee teachers for additional help.
• Seek and use past homework assignments, class notes, and available review materials.
• Follow directions.
• Find out when tests will be given out.
• Get a good night's rest and eat a normal breakfast before testing.
During Tests
• Read and pay careful attention to all directions.
• Read each passage and accompanying questions.
• Read every possible answer--the best one could be last.
• Read and respond to items one at a time rather than thinking about the whole test.
• Reread, when necessary, the parts of a passage needed for selecting the correct answer.
• Don't expect to find a pattern in the positions of the correct answers.
• Don't make uneducated guesses. Try to get the correct answer by reasoning and eliminating wrong answers.
• Decide exactly what the question is asking; one response is clearly best.
• Don't spend too much time on any one question.
• Skip difficult questions until all other questions have been answered. On scrap paper, keep a record of the unanswered items to return to, if time permits.
• Make sure to record the answer in the correct place on the answer sheet.
• Only change an answer if you are sure the first one you picked was wrong. Be sure to completely erase changed answers.
• Work as rapidly as possible with accuracy.
• After completion of the test, use any remaining time to check your answers.
• Keep a good attitude. Think positively!
STUDENTS' TEST-TAKING STRATEGIES CONTINUED
After Tests
• Examine your test scores; ask the teacher to explain your test scores if needed.
• Congratulate yourself on identified areas of strength.
• Identify areas of weakness which you will want to improve for a better performance next time.
• Ask your teacher to suggest areas of study that will help you perform better on the next test.
TEST ANXIETY
Students may experience anxiety about tests and may experience heightened anxiety before a testing situation. A certain degree of test anxiety is normal and may help students prepare more effectively, work more efficiently, and remain focused during testing. Too much anxiety, however, can negatively affect performance. The following strategies may assist students, parents, and teachers in reducing test anxiety.
Student Strategies for Reducing Test Anxiety
• Share your feelings of anxiety with parents and teachers.
• Think of the test as an opportunity to show what you know.
• Review homework and materials which pertain to the test topics.
• Relax, breathe deeply and stay focused on the test.
• Remember the test is only one way your academic performance is measured.
PARENT TEST-SUPPORT STRATEGIES
Preparing for Testing
• Note test dates on your home calendar; schedule appointments on non-testing days.
• Encourage your child to take responsibility for homework and class study.
• Help you child learn how to find information independently.
• Praise your child for work done well.
• Encourage your child to ask questions at home and in class.
• Get to know your child's teachers.
• Attend parent-teacher conferences.
• Confer with teachers on a regular basis for progress reports.
• Gather available test preparation materials.
•Assure your child knows that you value a good education.
Testing Day
• See that your child is rested and eats breakfast.
• See that your child arrives at school on time and is relaxed.
• Encourage your child to do the best work possible.
• Do not send your child to school if illness is apparent.
• Do not remove your child from school on test days for appointments.
After Testing
• Examine all test reports sent home.
• Determine areas of strengths and weaknesses.
• Praise your child's testing strengths and make a plan to address identified weaknesses.
• See your child's principal, counselor or teacher if additional information is required.
Parent Strategies for Reducing Test Anxiety
• Discuss the test openly and in a positive way.
• Have realistic expectations of your child's performance while encouraging his/her best efforts.
• Emphasize that the test is only one measure of academic performance.
• Emphasize that test scores do not determine a person's worth.

Saint Michael the Archangel School has been invited to participate in the annual What’s So Cool About Manufacturing video contest created by the Manufacturers Resource Center in Allentown, PA. This contest invites students to explore cool manufacturing careers and produce profiles of companies throughout Pennsylvania. The company we have been assigned is IMET located to Southampton, PA and we have visited the facility on a few occasions. Judges in each regional contest bestow a variety of awards, and each contest features an online vote at WhatsSoCool.org for its Viewers Choice Award
The teams of students and teacher coaches receive camera equipment, software, and professional guidance as they learn to script, record, and edit their video stories. The contest’s objective is to change students’ perceptions about manufacturing careers.

St. Joseph Novena
New here? Join us in prayer! Click here to get novena reminders by email!
[St. Joseph is a powerful patron. He is, as John Paul II called him, the Guardian of the Redeemer. He humbly accepted his role as guardian, husband and father in the Holy Family. Therefore, St. Joseph’s intercession has been sought for centuries.
St. Joseph was clearly very close to our Lord and so we come to him with this novena with a sense of humility because of his great humility.
There are actually a few different feast days for Saint Joseph, but March 19th has been most celebrated as his feast day in Western Christianity. But of course, you can pray a novena to him anytime.
St. Joseph Answers Prayers
I started this novena a month and a half after my husband was released from his job. He had one interview but no job offers. Thankfully on the 7th day, he received a job offer and starts his new job and career a week from tomorrow. Thank you St. Joseph and the Lord for hearing my prayers!
– Sam
Thanks be to God through the intercession of St. Joseph!!! The contract for our new house was signed today on St. Joseph’s feast day…the day after I finished the novena!
– Christy
St. Joseph Novena Prayers
Saint Joseph, you are the faithful protector and intercessor of all who love and venerate you. You know that I have confidence in you and that, after Jesus and Mary, I come to you as an example for holiness, for you are especially close with God. Therefore, I humbly commend myself, with all who are dear to me and all that belong to me, to your intercession. I beg of you, by your love for Jesus and Mary, not to abandon me during life and to assist me at the hour of my death.
Glorious Saint Joseph, spouse of the Immaculate Virgin, pray for me to have a pure, humble, charitable mind, and perfect resignation to the divine Will. Be my guide, my father, and my model through life that I may die as you did in the arms of Jesus and Mary.
Loving Saint Joseph, faithful follower of Jesus Christ, I raise my heart to you to implore your powerful intercession in obtaining from the Divine Heart of Jesus all the graces necessary for my spiritual and temporal welfare, particularly the grace of a happy death, and the special grace I now implore:
(Mention your request)
Guardian of the Word Incarnate, I feel confident that your prayers on my behalf will be graciously heard before the throne of God.
Day 1 – St. Joseph Most Just, Pray for us!
Day 2 – St. Joseph Most Prudent, Pray for us!
Day 3 – St. Joseph Most Loving Husband, Pray for us!
Day 4 – St. Joseph Most Strong, Pray for us!
Day 5 – St. Joseph Most Obedient, Pray for us!
Day 6 – St. Joseph Most Faithful, Pray for us!
Day 7 – St. Joseph Pillar of Families, Pray for us!
Day 8 – St. Joseph Patron of the Dying, Pray for us!
Day 9 – St. Joseph Terror of Demons, Pray for us!
Amen.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen.
More About St. Joseph
Most of everything we know about Saint Joseph comes from Scripture. There is some disagreement about his genealogy, but both Mark and Matthew say his descent is from David, the greatest king of Israel — and yet, he was a very humble, working man. He was a carpenter.
It is said that it was probably in Nazareth that St. Joseph was betrothed to and married Mary. After discovering that Mary was pregnant, also after their betrothal, he knew that the child was not his – and as such, he had planned on divorcing her quietly.
However, an angel came to him in a dream and told him that the child Mary was carrying was the son of God. Immediately upon hearing this, Joseph took Mary as his wife.
The angel came a second time to tell him his family was in danger, and he also reacted immediately by leaving everything behind him — his family, friends, and all that he owned — to go to Egypt with Mary and their newborn baby, Jesus.
There is a lot we don’t know about St. Joseph, but we do know that he loved Jesus as his own son, he respected God and he was a righteous man. (Matthew 1:18)
He is the Patron of…
St. Joseph is known to help the faithful especially by praying for the following:

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Greetings! In light of recent events in Florida, we want to assure you that the safety of your children is our top priority in all of our elementary schools. It is our goal to provide a secure and welcoming environment for your children to learn. Below are some of the steps we take to accomplish this goal.
This is an excellent time to reinforce with your child that all threats to the safety of our school communities are reported immediately to local law enforcement agencies. It is also our policy to take appropriate disciplinary action against those responsible for issuing threats.
All of us are partners in creating and maintaining safe school environments. Please also ask your children to be aware of suspicious behavior and report it to an adult at school.
Additionally, the Office for Child and Youth Protection has resources for talking to children about violence and other difficult subjects. You can access these resources by using the link below.
https://childyouthprotection.org/index.php/information/information-and-resources.
Thank you for your cooperation with this serious matter. May God bless you and your families during this season of Lent.
Many Blessings,

Students at St. Michael in Tullytown learning languages through Rosetta Stone
The upgraded Rosetta Stone package is allowing St. Michael’s students in grades 5-8 to pick from among 30 languages.
St. Michael the Archangel Catholic School in Tullytown has taken on a decidedly international feel, and the students there seem fully on board.
Russell Jerome is fulfilling his long-held goal of learning Russian. Emily Capella is soaking up Italian, and Shawn Hesington is taking a deep dive into Swedish.
Those three are among 100 students in grades 5-8 at the school who now have the ability to choose from among 30 languages after St. Michael acquired an upgraded software package from Rosetta Stone. Individual site licenses that are part of the $7,000 package allow each of the students to learn the language they choose on their own through their school-issued iPads.
They have one period a week during school to study their language, and as much time as they want at home. Among the other languages available are Arabic, Japanese, Swahili, Turkish, Greek, Latin and Hebrew.

For eighth-grader Russell, Russian strikes the right chord.
“I’ve always wanted to visit Russia,” he said. “It’s a beautiful place. I think I’m getting pretty good at it, and I want to get to the point where I can have full-on conversations with people in Russian.” Fellow eighth-grade student Shawn dreams of visiting Sweden one day, and being fluent in the language when he does would be great, he said.
“I think being able to speak more than one language makes you a more well-rounded person,” he said. “I’ve never tried to learn another language, but it’s easy on Rosetta Stone. I also think it will help my chances of eventually getting a good job because a lot of jobs now require a second or third language.”
Emily, a sixth-grader, said she chose Italian because most of her family is from that country. “It’s one of those fancy languages I thought would be fun to learn,” she said.
Eighth-grade student Anthony Burns said he prefers learning Spanish on his own via Rosetta Stone, rather than the traditional classroom-textbook method at his former school, Neshaminy’s Maple Point Middle School in Middletown.
“There is a lot of online interaction, and we have the advantage of studying at any time on our own with the iPad,” he said.
As parochial schools across the country celebrate National Catholic Schools Week, offering multiple foreign languages is another way for St. Michael to attract students, school Principal Stephen DiCicco said.
In addition to the language, the Rosetta Stone program also allows the students to learn about the culture of their chosen country, he added. St. Michael students in grades K-4 only have the option to learn Spanish under the new package, DiCicco said, but the individual site licenses also allow them to learn at home if they have their own iPad or other electronic device.
Under the previous Rosetta Stone package, Spanish was the only language available to all students, he said.
“This unique opportunity we have invested in will develop your child’s cultural and linguistic understanding,” DiCicco wrote in a letter to St. Michael parents about the new Rosetta Stone package. “Colleges, universities and employers will be looking for skills that set your child apart and the grasp of a foreign language is one of them.”
In a recent interview at the school, DiCicco added that “parents shop around. They are savvy shoppers, and anything we can offer that might make them choose our school is great. We have a number of parents of different nationalities. They want to spread that to their children, and this is a great opportunity for that.”
St. Michael paid for this year’s Rosetta Stone package with a combination of state funds and a grant from the Philadelphia archdiocese, the principal said. The school will explore options to fund the package beyond this school year, which ends June 30, he added.
St. Michael is also among many area Catholic schools that have greatly upgraded their technology in recent years. The school has projectors, smartboards, Apple TV and document readers in every classroom and the ability to access various Google platforms, DiCicco said.

Immunization Info!
June 2017
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Greetings! The Pennsylvania Department of Health has revised the immunization requirements for students effective the 2017-2018 school year. The revision replaces the 8-month provisional period for immunizations with the new requirement of a 5-day provisional period for students who do not have records of immunizations at the start of the required school year.
Prior to August 2017, a parent had 8 months to complete all required immunizations. This period is called the provisional enrollment.
Beginning August 2017, the provisional enrollment period is 5 days. A parent must have all immunizations of his/her child completed within the first 5 days of school. If the immunizations are not completed within those 5 days, the student must be excluded from school.
If the student is in the middle of a series of immunizations and it is too soon for the next dose, the parents must provide the school nurse with a plan for immunizations (signed by a health care provider) within the first 5 days of school. If the student has incomplete immunizations and no medical plan, the student must be excluded from school.
For your information, the following immunizations are needed for school attendance. Note that changes from the current requirements are highlighted.
Children in ALL grades (K-8) need the following immunizations for attendance:
