This fall your child will be entering second grade. I am recommending that your child should master by the start of second grade the attached list of sight words. Your child should be able to read as well spell these words.
It is important to have your child read over the summer. Have them choose books that interest them. Encouraging your child to read for fifteen or more minutes each day will greatly improve their skills and confidence in reading. Below are some recommendations of some great book series for your incoming second grader.
A to Z Mysteries Magic Treehouse Henry and Mudge Frog and Toad Junie B. Jones I Survived Who Would Win Owl Diaries The Puppy Place
Let’s not forget those math skills. Use flashcards to practice addition and subtraction facts to 20. Math facts should be memorized. Counting on their fingers is discouraged. ABCya and Math Playground are fun websites to practice these facts in a game setting. Take advantage of opportunities for your child to count change and begin to tell time during the summer months. Look for patterns wherever you may be. These will be beneficial to your child’s learning in 2nd grade. Enjoy the summer. I look forward to meeting you in the fall.
